Ways to Easily Repair Your Kitchen's Cabinets

Knowing how to repair your kitchen cabinets can save you money, time, and stress.

Like everything else on your property, kitchen cabinets have a lifespan and may experience various issues because of daily wear and tear. Whether you are dealing with loose knobs, misaligned doors, or more serious problems such as water damage, knowing how to repair your kitchen cabinets can save you money, time, and stress.

Fixing Crooked or Misaligned Doors

Crooked doors happen because you must tighten or readjust your hinges. There are various methods to adjust your misaligned doors:

  • Loosen the side-to-side adjustment screw on the hinge to gently slide the door left or right as needed.
  • If the door needs to be raised in height, lift it at the required hinge point and tighten the screw. Do the same thing if it must be lowered.
  • The screw controlling the depth is typically found at the back of the hinge. Loosen the screw and pull the door closer or push it away from the cabinet.

Address Loose Cabinet Handles Right Away

A loose cabinet knob can result in potential problems and should be addressed immediately. First of all, ensure not to overtighten the knob while using a screwdriver because it can trigger the knobs to break. It’s advisable to use adhesive if your cabinet handles keep loosening.

Kitchen Cabinet Doors Don’t Close Properly

You probably have a stripped screw hole if your cabinet doors do not close properly. This indicates that the hole has been worn out over time, and it’s no longer able to grip the screw. This can happen if a screw is tightened excessively. Fortunately, there are different ways to fill the stripped screw holes in your kitchen cabinets. One of the most prevalent ways is with a toothpick. Insert the toothpick into the hole along with wood glue and let it dry, then reinsert the screw. Alternatively, you can use wood filler.

Warped Kitchen Cabinets

Wood kitchen cabinets can become warped if you live in a humid environment or constantly use your oven. If you discover moisture on your cabinets, wipe it immediately to prevent additional damage. Unfortunately, once cabinets become warped, repairing them is difficult. Another option is to unscrew the door from the cabinet, lay it flat, and place something heavy on top, such as a sandbag. Keep the heavy item on top until the warp improves.

Noisy Closing Doors

If your cabinet doors bang noisily when shut, there is a quick and straightforward way to fix it: door bumpers. You can purchase bumpers (peel-and-stick soft padding) at any hardware store. Place the bumpers on the top and bottom of the cabinet doors to soften the impact.

Patch Up Scratches and Nicks

Nicks and scratches are among the issues that affect kitchen cabinets. Touch-up markers are excellent for filling in shallow scratches.

Did Your Drawer Fall Apart at the Corners?

The joints in your kitchen cabinets are crucial to the construction of your drawers. If the joints are poorly made, the drawer will quickly fall apart. You could salvage broken joints by removing the drawer to eliminate any old glue. Apply new wood glue to nail the pieces of the drawer back together.

Touch Up Rusty Hinges

Nothing is more annoying than rusty hinges. No matter how beautiful your kitchen cabinets are, they are susceptible to wear and tear over time. Remove the hinges and scrub them with steel wool to eliminate the rust. A great tip is to soak the hinges in soda for several hours. Rinse the hinges and reinstall them after you dry them. Otherwise, you can always install new hinges if unsatisfied with the results.
