Patty Morton is a designer for Kenwood Kitchens in their Columbia, MD Design Studio. In this interview, she shares this year’s kitchen and bath design trends as well as her own advice for those looking to remodel their kitchens this year.
What would your dream kitchen look like and why?
“I love the combination of Farmhouse blended with a Coastal Color Scheme. My favorite granite is Brown Fantasy because it has the tranquil look of ocean waves and sand. It pairs nicely with many cabinet colors, but my favorite would be a white or light grey, recessed shaker style cabinet. Add a light, bluish-green subway textured shimmer backsplash tile, a farmhouse sink, driftwood ceiling feature and driftwood floating shelves and you have the perfect recipe for a serene, coastal cottage kitchen.”
What are some of the kitchen or bath design trends right now?
“Farmhouse style with white recessed shaker on the perimeters and a dark greyish brown islands with decorative barn door looking paneled ends. Blue is another contrasting color being used right now for islands for a pop of color. Light countertops with apron sinks along with matte black faucets. Different shades of gold faucets and hardware is trending now as well. Geometric backsplash tile is also very popular.”
How do you go about selecting the right color scheme and products for
your clients?
“It is an important part of the design process to see the home and verify if the existing color schemes are what they want to see in their design. Then, I coordinate with what they have as well as asking what cabinet and countertop color they would like. Lighting has a huge impact on paint colors, so I always choose paint colors for their home in the existing lighting.”
What is your favorite part about the Kitchen & Bath Remodeling process
and why?
“My favorite part of the process is selecting the customer’s cabinet, countertop and tile colors to help them create their dream kitchen. It’s my favorite part because I enjoy the creativity and building relationships with my customers.”
What is your best advice for someone who is looking to remodel their
kitchen or bathroom this year?
“Select cabinets and countertops in a classic neutral tone. Then, add colorful tile and other accents to create a light, bright and airy feel but with an updated, high design flair.”
